UVA Rays: The Basics

For a long time scientists believed that this form of ultraviolet wave did not caused any long-lasting damage to the epidermis. But recently it has been discovered that UVA rays destroy the keratinocytes cells in the lower epidermis layer - this is where most skin cancers are formed. UVA contributes and in some cases initiates the development of skin cancer. It is also the dominant tanning ray. Whether you are tanning away on a beach in the Caribbean or just using sunbeds, either of these methods can cause serious damage over time. UVA can even penetrate clouds and glass. So even on those 'typically-English weather' days, we're not safe!

UVB Rays: The Basics

Sunburn. We've all had it! Blame those pesky UVB rays. UVB rays are the main cause of skin reddening and sunburn. This ultraviolet ray damages the superficial layers of the skin. It plays a key role in the development of skin cancer and can also play a major part in photoaging. The intensity of the rays can vary depending on the season, location and time of day. Although the risk of damage by UVB rays is more significant in the summer or in a hot country, UVB rays can penetrate your skin all year round. That's why it is SO important to wear your SPF everyday.

Keratinocytes cells - These are protein cells that are found in the epidermis layer of the skin. They produce keratin which is the main component in hair. Keratin helps strengthen the epidermis layer.
Photoaging - This is the effect that long term sun exposure has on the skin. This can include thing like wrinkles, dark spots etc.
Subcutaneous layer - This is the lowest layer of the skin. It is made up with fatty tissue and serves as a shock absorbent layer.
